At the 2025 American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Ball, Cheryl Smith, CEO of CPR Choice, was honored for her outstanding contributions to advocacy. As a dedicated member of the Knoxville AHA Board of Directors and the 2025 co-chair of the Association’s Tennessee State Advocacy Committee, Cheryl has played a pivotal role in advancing policies that promote heart health and emergency preparedness.
The 2025 AHA Heart Ball recognized four key areas in the fight against heart disease: equity, knowledge, discovery, and advocacy. Cheryl’s recognition in advocacy underscores her commitment to championing policies that improve cardiovascular health and save lives.
Alongside Cheryl, other honorees recognized for their impact in these areas include:
- Chara Carey – Healthy Lifestyles Program Specialist, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley (Equity)
- Dr. Lekshmi Seemanthini – Interventional Cardiologist, Tennova (Knowledge)
- Dr. Sumeet Sharma – Pediatric Cardiologist, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital (Discovery)
AHA’s 2025 Advocacy Agenda
Earlier this year, the AHA released its 2025 Advocacy Agenda, outlining key priorities for legislative and policy efforts at the federal level. This year’s agenda focuses on:
- Ensuring access to care for all individuals
- Strengthening the health care workforce
- Advancing quality, equity, and health care system resiliency
- Leading innovation in care delivery
- Reducing health care costs for patients
Cheryl’s advocacy aligns closely with these priorities, particularly in ensuring schools and communities are prepared for cardiac emergencies.
Representing AHA at Tennessee Lobby Day
On March 5th, Cheryl will be a leading advocate at Tennessee Lobby Day, where she will join other advocates, legislators, and families affected by sudden cardiac arrest to rally support for Cardiac Emergency Response Plans in schools. Thanks to the efforts of Senator Joey Hensley and Representative Scott Cepicky, the Smart Heart Act passed unanimously through the General Assembly, ensuring that every school in Tennessee has a cardiac emergency response plan in place. This vital legislation ensures that when a cardiac emergency strikes, every second counts and lives can be saved.

A True Advocate for Heart Health
Cheryl Smith’s dedication to advocacy, community service, and education continues to make a lasting impact. Whether she’s leading legislative efforts, promoting hands-on CPR training, or ensuring children have the resources to develop healthy habits, Cheryl’s influence is felt across Knoxville and beyond. Her recognition at the AHA Heart Ball is a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a difference.
Congratulations, Cheryl, and all of the honorees, on this well-deserved recognition!
