Nashville Heart Walk 2017CPR Choice Nashville was honored to be a part of the American Heart Association’s 2017 Greater Nashville Heart Walk on October 14, 2017. The Heart Walk is a non-competitive 5K (with an optional 1 mile route) which took place at Vanderbilt University’s Caper Field in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Nashville American Heart Association estimates that 8,000 people attended the 2017 Greater Nashville Heart Walk. This year’s event has raised over $1,500,000. These funds are put to hard work in the American Heart Association’s dedicated effort to raising awareness and making improvements to reduce No. 1 (heart disease) and No. 5 (stroke) killers in America.

Sean Smith with CPR Choice Nashville has many reasons to have a strong passion for what he does as a CPR Instructor. Sean’s daughter, Maegan Smith, was diagnosed in 2016 with a heart condition which required surgery to correct. His 20 years of teaching CPR to thousands of individuals and medical professionals combined with his more than 25 years as a firefighter and EMT never hit as close to home as it did the day his daughter was diagnosed. Maegan has participated in this event for the past 2 years with her friends and family by her side supporting her. Like her father, Maegan has a desire to bringing awareness to heart disease and stroke risks and looks to increase her fundraising goal for the 2018 Greater Nashville Heart Walk.

CPR Choice Nashville was invited to set up a booth near the starting line of the walk. CPR Instructors Sean Smith and Scott Dupree were able to share some hands-on CPR skills with many of the participants and spectators attending the event. Saving lives begins with having awareness of what steps we can all take in the event of a cardiac emergency. Education is a critical step in this process. CPR Choice Nashville strives to give our students the ability to apply what they have learned in a CPR certification course in real-life situations to help save lives. That might be the life of a loved one, friend or co-worker. Preparing our students to be able to respond with confidence begins with practicing and learning CPR skills and using AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillator) while under the guidance of our highly experienced instructors like Sean Smith.
