Semi-Automatic vs. Fully Automatic AEDs: What’s the Difference?
The Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 AED is available in both Semi-Automatic and Fully Automatic configurations. Both models provide the same advanced rescue technology, real-time CPR feedback, automatic self-testing, and life-saving treatment capabilities. The only difference is how a shock is delivered when one is needed.
Semi-Automatic AED (Most Common Configuration)
- Automatically analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm
- Advises the rescuer when a shock is recommended
- Requires the rescuer to press the flashing shock button to deliver treatment
- Provides an extra confirmation step to ensure everyone is clear before the shock is delivered
- Most commonly deployed in workplaces, schools, churches, fitness centers, and public-access AED programs
- Preferred by many organizations and trained responders because it allows the rescuer to control the moment of shock delivery
Fully Automatic AED
- Automatically analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm
- Determines when a shock is needed
- Delivers the shock automatically without requiring the rescuer to press a button
- Eliminates the need for a final user action before shock delivery
- Can help reduce hesitation during a rescue, particularly for inexperienced responders
Which Option Should You Choose?
Choose a Semi-Automatic AED if:
- You want the AED configuration most commonly found in public-access AED programs
- Your organization has designated responders or staff members who receive AED training
- You prefer having a final confirmation before the shock is delivered
Choose a Fully Automatic AED if:
- The AED may frequently be used by untrained bystanders
- You want to minimize the number of actions required during a rescue
- You prefer the device to deliver a shock automatically once one is advised
Our Recommendation
Most organizations choose the Semi-Automatic Powerheart G5 AED, which is the configuration most commonly deployed across businesses, schools, churches, and public facilities. It provides the same advanced rescue technology as the Fully Automatic model while allowing the rescuer to confirm the scene is clear before shock delivery.
Regardless of which configuration you select, both models are designed to help rescuers respond quickly and confidently during a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.
